Ogola Opot - Ogola Opot - Juma Odera

from Nyatiti Singles Volume 1 by Dagoretti Records

/

about

Ogolo Opot playing nyatiti and singing "Juma Odera" on CMS records 7-2029, year 1968.

Ogola Opot is considered by many to be the founder of modern nyatiti music. His nyatiti riffs are so common in all of the music that followed him, that his records could be thought of as a primer for potential nyatiti students. Hailing from Alego, Siaya, Opot’s recorded output was prolific.

These two songs were released on the Capitol Music Stores label out of Nairobi in 1968, if the date that some DJ or collector scrawled on both sides of the record is accurate. The record is listed as “vocal” which isn’t typical of nyatiti records but this record might have been so early that conventions weren’t yet in place.

about

Dagoretti Records Ann Arbor, Michigan

"Dagoretti" is the confluence of three large pathways in Nairobi connecting all of Kenya together. It is also the Swahilified pronounciation of "The great." We like to think that we put out great records that connect distant places together.
