"Jet Back" was recorded live in a tiny, self serve takoyaki place in the Shinsekai area of Osaka, Japan in February, 2017 before an audience of about 25 as part of a monthly event dedicated to cutting edge acoustic and acoustic-ish music. Normally, the event features solo performers or duos, but this particular evening featured Zujaka as a complete unit. The results were fantastic.
Though inaudible, this show featured butoh dancer Yangjah who should be credited with directing the band, and thus the recording. Without her, it is unlikely that the performance would have been nearly this good. Yangjah created a vital link between band and performer, both interpreting the music visually and pushing the sounds forward. It was a truly unique sight.
However, this show was notable for other reasons, as it featured the return of sound artist Jet Vel from a long period away from music. The last time I saw Jeff, he was a hippie noise and experimental artist. When he turned up this evening, he appeared as a grey haired musical sage, complete with grey hair and suit. Jet talks little in normal time and on this night he spoke even less as if he wanted to save his musical voice for the show. When the show began he wasted little time showing that he was, in fact, back hence the title of this record.
The show was nothing short of spectacular, the kind of experience that you imagine audiences of great jazz and experimental shows of old had, the kind where, after it is over, you suddenly realize that you were privy to something special. So, you thank yourself for taking the time to go out and see some live music and understand exactly why you should do it more often.
Dagoretti Records is honored to have the opportunity to present this music to the public.

"Dagoretti" is the confluence of three large pathways in Nairobi connecting all of Kenya together. It is also the Swahilified pronounciation of "The great." We like to think that we put out great records that connect distant places together.
